CONSTITUTION of the JUSTICE SOCIETY

 

 

Article I.  Name

 

Section 1. The name of this organization shall be The Justice Society.

 

Article II.  Purpose

 

Section 1.  To promote and enhance an interest in paralegals and the law profession through various activities and events throughout the semesters.

 

Section 2.  To promote students with the opportunity to experience interaction with other students that might have similar interest in paralegal studies as well as the law profession.

 

Section 3.  To teach the community about the fast growing profession of paralegals as well as other law professions.

 

Section 4.  This organization shall function in accordance to all SGA and campus regulations and policies.

 

Article III.  Membership

 

Section 1.  Membership is open to any Villa Julie student part-time or full time with an interest in paralegal or the law profession and is in good standing.

 

Article IV.  Officers and Elections

           

Section 1.  The Justice Society shall elect a President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, and Chair for the Law Day committee at the end of every spring term as provide below. All officers’ terms will start at the end of the spring semester and continue consecutively until the final day of the spring semester.

 

(a)   Nominations for the above positions will be held from April 1st to April 15th. All nominations should be in writing and given to the current Secretary before midnight on April 15th.

(b)   The current Secretary shall send a ballot of all nominated officers to all members of the Justice Society for a vote.

(c)    All votes must be received by midnight on April 30th by the current Secretary to be counted.

(d)   The current Secretary is to then send in writing to all members by the end of the term the names of the new elected officers.

Section 2.  All officers must be on the Law Day committee. At least one officer must be on every other committee.

Section 3.  The duties of the President of the Justice Society include, but are not limited to, overseeing the overall performance and production of the club, coordinate with the Treasurer to formulate budget, supervise the duties of each elected officer and committee chairperson, and elect all meeting dates.

Section 4.  The duties of the Vice President of the Justice Society include, but are not limited to, to assist the President in all duties.

Section 5.  The duties of the Treasurer of the Justice Society include, but are not limited to, coordinate with the President to formulate overall budget, coordinate with each Committee Chairperson to formulate budgets, collect all fundraising profits, request cash boxes from the Student Affairs office when needed, and coordinate with student affairs about carrying over money into next year for special purposes like Law Day described in Article V of this document.

Section 6.  The duties of the Secretary of the Justice Society include, but are not limited to, notify all members of meetings, maintain all administrative records, maintain minutes of all meetings, and hold elections for next years officers.

Section 7. The duties of the Historian include,but are not limited to updating the website. Aiding in the various club activities, creating an executive directory, and contributing innovative ideas that aid in the progression of the club.

Section 8.  On the first meeting the chairpersons for the committees will be elected. The committees shall include, but are not limited to, the Committee for Fundraisers, the Committee for Social Events, the Committee for Educational Events, the Committee for Service Projects.

Section 9.  The duties of the Chair of all committees include but are not limited to, overseeing all events ran through that committee, reporting to the president on all events and programs running through that committee, and except for the Law Day Chair, be responsible for holding at least one activity per semester.

Section 10.  Any elected officer may hold more than one position in the Justice Society, except an officer may not hold both the President and Vice President positions.

Article V.  Law Day

Section 1.  “It is fitting that the American people should remember with pride and vigilantly guard the great heritage of liberty, justice and equality under the law.” These illustrious words by President Dwight D. Eisenhower demonstrate America’s sentiment towards law and thus, Law Day, which began on May 1, 1961, was born.  Villa Julie’s Paralegal program, which emanated 12 years later, has traditionally recognized Law Day through its various events and ceremonies used to reflect on the freedoms, democratic ideals and legal heritage established since America’s inception.  The Justice Society works to promote Law Day at Villa Julie College every year through celebration in hopes that students and faculty will continue to value their independence and embrace the legal customs that so-govern the United States

Section 2.  Law Day should invite the alumni, students, and community around and of College in an event of education and celebration. In past years there have been visitors from different areas of law, law school admissions, and law school students. It is hoped that this event will grow each year and become an annual tradition.

Section 3.  The Law Day committee shall plan the Law Day events to be held, send out invitations to the speakers and attendees, coordinate with the law faculty and staff to prepare and attend the event, and work with the Student Affairs office to make sure all events and needs are met.

Article VI.  Miscellaneous

Section 1.  This constitution shall be a guideline for the Justice Society and may need to be altered in the future do to changing needs and interest. To amend this constitution all officers of the Justice Society must ratify the amendment and turn the amendment into Student Affairs before the end of their term in office. 

Section 2.  This document or any amendment to this document may be signed without the presence of any other officers and will still be valid if the signatures are on separate copies of the last page, as long as all signatures are attached to the constitution in full.

WHEREFORE, we have read the above document and as the current officers of the Justice Society agree that this document represents the purposes and will of the Society.
