About

Daniel E. Keller is a graduate of Towson University's English Department and its Graduate School, where he obtained an M.S. in Professional Writing. He has taught both on the college and middle school levels. A VJC faculty member since 2002, Mr. Keller teaches courses in composition, technical communications, and business writing. Though officially trained a teacher of writing, Mr. Keller has also taught European History spanning from Medieval Times to the Second World War. His current research includes the essential connection between classical rhetorical theory and modern business documents. As well, he is very much interested in the writing process for young adolescents and young adults. Another line of his research focuses on the essence of conveying effective ethos (ethics) in written argument.

Mr. Keller, in addition to teaching and researching, has served as a basketball and lacrosse coach for middle school boys. He has also volunteered his time and writing to different efforts in Baltimore City: he was a reading and writing tutor for underprivileged, inner-city youths and has volunteered his writing to the Downtown Sailing Center's publication, Breezes. He has also dabbled in freelance writing, publishing his first book review, a critique of Wayward Sailor: In Search of the Real Tristan Jones, by Anthony Dalton, in October, 2003 for Good Old Boat Magazine.

When he is not grading papers or preparing lessons, Mr. Keller enjoys sports and excercising. He partakes in running, mountain biking, and kayaking, but his passion is sailing. An avid racer, Mr. Keller competes on the water with the J/22 class. He has raced in Baltimore; however, he truly gained his sea legs while living and teaching on Aquidneck Island. This past summer, while in Newport, Rhode Island, he competed in the Newport Yacht Club's Tuesday Night Race Series with the J/22 Fleet. This summer, he plans to participate in his first offshore race: The Marion-Bermuda Race, scheduled for June, 2005. Mr. Keller's real dream, however, is to take a short sabbatical and make a trans-Atlantic sailing voyage, departing from Annapolis, Maryland and docking at Falmouth, England, with a quick stop in between at the Azores to island-hop.
